Of course I look up Why do you think I go to a chiropractor? I keep running into low stuff.

There's examples of things done wrong all over the place. Some of it may be that things were done after the contractor left the building (painting, for example). Some could be renovations where modifying the sprinklers was not in the budget and the local AHJ signed off on it, or was never told in the first place. But what do you do when you find something? I've mentioned it a couple of times and the only one that was ever done was some Omegas replaced in a hotel.

A lot of this falls on the AHJ who is more than likely under-staffed and under-trained to really do a serious inspection that covers everything that it is supposed to at all the buildings in his jurisdiction. I'm not chiding the AHJs out there who are trying to do the best job they can, but how many have all the resources, personnel and training they need to cover all of their functions they are asked to do in their jurisdiction?

Those of us whose names end in PE have to be especially careful. We are documented to have the knowledge and if it can be proven that we knew of a dangerous condition and did not report it and something happens, we could have some liability. Now what meets the definition of "dangerous condition"? Methinks it could be open to interpretation.

The family was on vacation in Maine one year. We had lunch in a quaint
restaurant in an old building with exposed sprinkler pipe. The old
sprinklers looked very clean and bright. I found a place to take a better
look at a stairway. The sprinklers dated back to 193?. During remodeling
someone carefully painted each sprinkler with gold or brass paint. I asked
to speak to the owner to tell him of the deficiency that now required all
the sprinklers to be replaced. He said that a sprinkler inspection had been
made recently and that there were no deficiencies. I gave up trying to be
helpful unless I have an official capacity and was being paid for my
inspection..
