Soft suction is just hose that rolls flat. It's like the rest of the hose on an engine. The difference is that it is usually large diameter, and short, to keep friction loss down. These days it is "single jacket" and synthetic inside and out. It doesn't need to be hung to dry. Our water department used to think we used hard suction to hook up. When it's charged, it is hard, and looks it. We keep hard suction around basically for EOTEAWKI type events. I think its all at the shop. It really is hard. You can use it like a straw to draft water below the level of the pump.
