Maybe a little off the wall, but while the dry system and small fire loading
may address the FP concerns, would the possibility exist for a stampede
should the pyrotechnics go off below a grandstand full of people?

Maybe its good that we in the USA don't see many of the films of soccer
stadium fires.

Subject: RE: Explosives

Per code he could have a lot more than that in there without requiring
sprinklers. For between 2-5 lbs there are some separation requirements in
table 415.3.1 but that's it.

Less than 2 lb of fire works obviously isn't considered a big deal by the
building codes.

Outdoor grandstands = Group A-5 Occupancy.

The trailer would be a Group M, Mercantile. Combustible construction.

However, the trailer itself may be prohibited from being located below the
seating area by the following code:

IFC 2003:
304.1.3 Space underneath seats. Spaces underneath
grandstand and bleacher seats shall be kept free from combustible
and flammable materials. Except where enclosed in
not less than 1-hour fire-resistance-rated construction in accordance
with the International Building Code, spaces underneath
grandstand and bleacher seats shall not be
occupied or utilized for purposes other than means of
egress.

So technically, the trailer, regardless of what its purpose is, shouldn't
even be there unless it meets the building code definition of 1 hour rated
construction which is pretty unlikely.

But if the trailer is there and no AHJ objects, and the area below the
grandstands is provided with a dry pipe system, that would create
suppression for a trailer fire. The dry system is going to be triggered by
a fire below the stands obviously, so where's the issue other than the
possibility of the dry system not being designed to handle the fuel loading
of a trailer fire?

There's just no code requirement for sprinklers for the trailer or 2 lbs of
1.4G.

Subject: Explosives

I have a customer who stores a quantity of less than 2 # of Class 1.4G
explosives. These explosives are comparable to fireworks. The 1.4G is
stored in a metal cabinet, not rated. The storage unit is 8 foot wide x 8
foot high x 12 foot long. The construction is wood frame, plywood floor,
wood panel interior, and metal outside. If this sounds like a job trailer,
your are right. The trailer is parked under a grandstand. the steel/wood
grandstand is protected with a dry system, under the grandstands. Other
contents are ordinary combustibles, wood, paper, cardboard.

Upon occasion, the trailer is moved to other locations for shows. Then the
trailer is parked under the grandstand. unless the trailer is put in the
exact same spot, connection to the sprinkler system will be difficult. Can
the flex head work for this application? As the 1.4G is in a cabinet, I
would feel better with a sprinkler head in the cabinet, with a head or heads
protecting the trailer.

Any suggestions?
