If you read the definition of expanded and exposed you could say that a foam
mattress with the cloth coverings MAY be considered as being Exposed.
(definition of exposed in 3.9.1.10, 2007) since the cloth covering could absorb
water...

BUT

the addition of the plastic bagging of the items takes it a different direction
as it would create a barrier that could retard water absorption, now you're
encapsulated.

Probably end up with control mode sprinklers with in-racks (yeah that will get
them excited).

But remember we've got Solid Piled plastics (mattresses) and Racked plastic
commodities (sofas) so there are two different chapters in NFPA 13 to deal with.

Time to go talk to Mr. Engineer........... There's a bit of analysis needed
here and some criteria needs to be defined and verified.

In the IFC, "Furniture, wood or metal with plastic covering or padding" is
considered as Class IV commodity. Probably where the engineer got his info
from.

ESFR may not be appropriate if these are foam mattresses that should be
classified as exposed and expanded Group A Plastic...

I hope he specified more than just ESFR. Did he give you any specifics or has
he left the selection of pressure and K-factor up to you?
Depending on the water data and what is chosen you may or may not need a pump.
Hopefully he gave you recent water information so you don't have to guess.

ESFR would eliminate in-racks by definition but the depth of the racks and
arrangement of the commodities may create some major shielding issues.

Thank you for the confirmation before I go to the engineer with hat in hand and
try and explain why I can't do what he asked. I this case it means a pump.

Interesting since NFPA 13 A.5.6.3 (2007) lists foam mattresses (in finished
form) as a Group A Plastic. Box springs which are mostly wood and metal as
Class III.

I would consider the foam in the sofas and probably lean toward classifying
them the same as the mattresses.

They probably looked at Furniture, with plastic coverings - Class IV.
But with foam plastic cushioning it's back to Group A plastics (sofas).

Somebody messed up. Need to remind them of Sofa World. This stuff burns fast
and hot and flows.

You need to look at the racks again too.

Subject: Mattress stroage

I am working on a bid for a warehouse. I was given a floor plan for the new
building and a copy of the fire plan from the same building they just finished
in another state.

The also sent photos of the existing building.

The pics show mattress in plastic bags staked on end all lined up in a row.
Just like in dramatic burn video I recently watched.

The other area of the warehouse has couches bagged the same way. Sitting on
12'3" bay racks.

The sprinkler plans for the this are list it as Class IV commodity protected
with EFSR heads and no in rack system.

Even if they put the stuff back in the boxes I can't see how they a class V
commodity

Is there some thing I am missing before I call the engineer?

Thank you for your attention.
