Reza, I wouldn't necessarily say the 'right' choice, but certainly it is one of many good choices depending on the specific application and a number of factors.
It seems as though many use 'FM-200' in lieu of 'Clean Agent' like we use 'Kleenex' for 'tissue'. There are many options when considering protecting spaces with irreplaceable or very costly items where it is also needs to be "safe" for people. Not only are there a number of different Halocarbon Clean Agents (all with advantages and disadvantages) but there are also inert gases, water mist etc. that have their applications. We as professionals should know (at least in a general sense) what the choices are and something about what are the best options for certain scenarios. Too many times I believe owners are misinformed by 'experts' like those that see a server room and say, "what yer gonna need der is one of dose preaction systems". It may be that a preaction system best fits what the owner is looking for, but many times they really don't understand what they are getting for their buck. Back to your question...is FM-200 safe for humans to be around during a discharge? Yes, for a certain duration at a certain concentration. Should you leave an area if FM-200 discharges? Yes, absolutely. If you are an IT guy in your server room with a clean agent system and air sampling detection and you decide to have a cig and the agent discharges and you panic, slip, fall, hit your head, knock yourself unconscious for a few minutes; are you going to die? No, not from the clean agent anyway. The best answer is get informed if you are going to be dealing with these specialty systems. NFPA 2001 Annex has a lot of good info including toxicity of different Halocarbons (Table A.1.5.1.2(a)). Note: FK-5-1-12 is Novec 1230; HFC-125 is Ecaro; HFC-227ea is FM-200. Also, the manufacturers and distributors of these products have a lot of good general and specific information. Reed A. WHILE ALL THE VISITORS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO EVVACUTE THE ROOM IN BEFORE FM-200 RELEASE? I HAVE SEEN FM-200 SYSTEM IS USED FOR SUCH PLACES, THEN WHY? IS THERE ANY CONCERN?
