Also worth noting that just because a state fire marshal exists does not mean that they resolve differences in interpretation between local AHJ's or act as a higher authority over-ruling a local AHJ's interpretation.

Jay,

A State Fire Marshal is of no value unless you have Uniform Codes and
Standards adopted statewide. We in NJ have a statewide Uniform Construction and Fire Code, based on the IBC, IRC, IFC, NFPA-13, etc. etc. Construction
Officials, Fire Officials, Plan Reviewers and Inspectors are
certified/licensed by the state. Our administrative regulations are uniform
and include standardized applications, permitting, procedures and a
Construction Board of Appeals.
Is it perfect, no, but it's damn good.

The Uniform Construction Code is Title 5 Chapter 23
The Uniform Fire Code is Title 5 Chapter 70

Here's all the online links to view our codes online free of charge

Hope this helps, good luck

Subject: Fire marshall

I was wandering if any of you could advise me on how to handle a unique problem. The state in which I reside does not have a state fire marshall. Every little "po dunk" town here basically hires a guy and says your the
firemarshall. Each town does what they want to do and there is no
consistency at all. Everyone (i.e. sprinkler companies, business
owners, ect, ect) want a SFM. The only ones against the idea are the local AHJ's. Where can I turn when I know one of these AHJ's is wrong? Where can I turn in regards to enforcement problems? Basically if your his buddy then you pass no matter what and the companies are called stupid (even if
you can prove it in code).
