An old fitter, perhaps wise, told me one should always throw a simple swing
check before a RP. This way once the high pressure stabilizes past the
first swing check the RP doesn't burp anymore. I don't know if that make
sense? We don't do RP's in these parts. Simple swing check is all that's
required in MN. It's in a rule or statute that out rules AWWA.

Subject: RE: statistics - air pockets

Chris-

Just reading your post and catching up some here I think I just figured out
a problem we had 2 summers ago.
I used to test a storage building next to Boston's Logan Airport. Large ELO
system above a high ceiling, 3 wet zones, fire pump, RP BFP.
The facilities guy called me almost every Monday morning at 6:30 when he'd
get to work and find the floor wet from the RP dumping.
We'd get there for the first few calls, all cleaned up, everything seemed
fine. After that, he'd just call to let me know it did it again.
No alarms, pump never started, RP was right off the street supply too. We
initially attributed it to city dropping over night and just figured that
was why.

I wonder if this is going to become a problem with all the RP's we're
supposed to be using from now on. Those automatic air vets we install in
split case pumps can take serious pressure, maybe that's a solution.
