When I was learning this trade from those that had been in it awhile, the last thing I remember doing before leaving a system, was me, a bucket, and a crescent wrench at the highest sprinkler. When the little bubble things no longer showed, I tightened the sprinkler. Seemed to work fine, just like the 2 check valves when cross was a concern.
