I can see a couple of options that may or may not work on your project. 1 - Put in a 2.8k sprinkler to cut down the discharge. This may make the impact of these heads next to nothing. So, you do the room design and calculate the 7 sprinklers (4 in living / bath and 3 in closets) + 2 in the hallway if needed.
2 - Increase the design area to 1500 sq ft and eliminate heads in the closets and washrooms from the design area per NFPA 13: 22.4.4.6.2 The requirements of 22.4.4.6.1 to include every sprinkler in the design area to be included in the system discharge shall not apply where the area of application is equal to or greater than the minimum allowable area of Figure 11.2.3.1.1 for the appropriate hazard classification (including a 30 percent increase for dry pipe systems). Sprinkler discharge in closets, washrooms, and similar small compartments requiring only one sprinkler shall be permitted to be omitted from hydraulic calculations within the area of application. Sprinklers in these small compartments shall, however, be capable of discharging minimum densities in accordance with Figure 11.2.3.1.1. I had done a job several years ago where we took the QR reduction and had a situation similar to what you described. I included the heads in the closet and had them as 2.8K sprinklers. However, the reviewing engineer required we do a minimum of 1500 sq ft. When I took out the heads in the washrooms and closets, we actually had a lower demand than the 900 sq ft with all of the heads included. Good luck! -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ed Kramer Sent: Thursday, March 05, 2009 9:38 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Room Design Jay, I think you're stuck with including the closet sprinks in your calcs - it would be odd for a residential closet to have self-closing doors. Any idea why the architect wants QR sprinks?
