Bobby, Does the sprinkler line stagger within the wall assembly (making it a membrane penetration)? or is it a straight shot through the wall (making it a through penetration)?
Bill, Could you argue that by firestopping the backside of the through penetration essentially makes the escutcheon side a membrane penetration? I know that "technically" this is not the case but you would have a strong argument for intent of the code. We must remember that the alternative is attempting to classify the escutcheon as having some sort of rating (which it does not have) or attempting to fire stop around the semi-recessed assembly (which I am pretty sure violates the listing of the head. Not 100% sure about this though, any remarks from manufacturers out there?). Or, lastly, completely penetrating the wall, turning up to an upright and firestopping both sides (which I am sure the architect would be thrilled about).
