Good question. The rest of the story (as Paul Harvey would say), is
that the allowance in 8.4.2 was added to address an industry practice
done for years whereby sidewalls were used to protect beneath doors.
The problem with this practice is that the listing requires the
sprinkler to be within a specified distance below the ceiling and
located within a specified distance of a wall (neither were typically
satisfied when installed next to a door). Since the TC explicitly
identified it as an allowance for standard sidewalls (with a
reasonable expectation that doors would not be wider than what could
be covered by a sprinkler on each side), I'd stick with being
excessively literal. I also suspect one would have a difficult time
arguing equivalency for an EC on one side when compared to standard
sprinklers on both sides just one activation times alone. On the
other hand, the likely consequences for such installations seems
fairly insignificant so doesn't seem like something to keep one awake
at night. It's like spending the entire time available for an
acceptance test on looking for a single drip from a hydro that lost no
pressure and ignoring EVERYTHING else that should be checked.
