We have a job to replace some painted (4) sprinkler heads in a fire rated
corridor, (I believe 2 hour). They are semi-recessed and we may have to cut a
hole in the drywall to change them, the wrenches are no longer manufactured.
If we cut the hole, and use one of the common 4" metal rings that fit around
the escutcheon to conceal the hole is the fire rating still valid? Or should I
tell the owner to call a drywall person out to drywall in the extra space?

Matt,
There is no code or provision for being able to add a fire rating to walls or
artitions by adding sprinklers on both sides, but I do wish I had a dollar for
very time I have had an architect ask me this. It seems like it would make
ense, but there is no listing or precedence that I am aware of for doing this
or walls - unlike what is in place for glazing with window sprinklers and such.
Luckily, rated doors are not that expensive. Your contractor should just buy
ne.
Good luck,

ubject: non-rated door
I have a case where a contractor wants to put a decorative (not fire rated)
door
nto a rated hallway of a non-sprinkled building. I was hoping that there was
ome code or study that allows for a water curtain to be placed on both sides of
he door in order to maintain the fire rating. Has anyone heard of anything like
his?
