A recent annual sprinkler inspection found several head guards damaged and in need of replacement. NFPA 2002 13-6.2.8 states: "Sprinklers subject to mechanical injury shall be protected with listed guards." NFPA 1996 13-2.1.1 states: "all materials essential to successful system operation shall be listed." This system was installed around 1994-1996. The sprinkler heads are Central Model A. I contacted Tyco Tech support and they told me they no longer manufacture or have remaining stock of head guards for this sprinkler. Tyco checked to see if the current Tyco heads replaced the Model A, but they did not. So, there is no listed head guard available. Also, I am not certain if the installing contractor even used the Central head guard. I am trying to get a data sheet from Tyco to determine if the correct head guard was used.
Question 1: If there are no head guards available, the owner must change the sprinkler to a newer model with a head guard available, right? Question 2: If it is determined the installing contractor did not use the listed head guard and a generic brand was approved by the AHJ at time of installation, could we replace with the same generic brand (if it is available)?
