Good Morning members:
Got a question about combustible concealed space: I have a building that has a roof structure built of 20" deep combustible barjoist (2x4 top and bottom chords with steel tubing for webs) with a plywood roof deck and ceiling. The GC was originally going to fill trusses entirely full of fiberglass insulation (bats) thus nullifying the sprinkler requirement per NFPA 13 (2002) 8.14.1.2.7, now he must provide an air gap to allow the space to breathe. If the air gap is 4" or less is there a requirement to protect this space, since it's no longer in compliance with 8.14.1.2.7? I would suspect it is still ok to keep it unprotected by using 8.14.1.2.4 since we are less than 6"? Any thoughts? Jim Johnston, P.E.
