One hundred and three years and a few days ago is the anniversary of patent number 842,725 for an 'automatic sprinkler'. (January 29th, 1907) This is the earliest patent I have found so far for a glass bulb type sprinkler head. Looking at the drawing some of the design principals are still used today. For example a threaded insert is used to tighten the glass bulb against the seat. The one obvious difference is the round bulb in 1907 verses the oblong bulbs used today.
I'm a few day's late for this. Things were busy due to projects due end of January.
