NFPA 14 '03 6.1.2.2 Paraphrase - Standpipe and lateral piping.located in
stairs.or shall be protected...equal to stairs ways.

So there isn't a building with standpipes that has less than 1 hour stairs
right? So how is there all this standpipe lateral piping running exposed
around parking garages and basements? Or through the first floor above
common ACT? The sprinkler exception is only for 2.5" lateral piping serving
hose connections. What am I missing here? I'm not saying this is not good
idea just trying to reconcile with reality.

I have a 9 story 1905 building to retrofit with standpipes and the landings
on the stairs aren't big enough for a vertical pipe (6") and hose valve.
And I ain't talking a few inches. There really aren't landings in one of
the required stairs as it's more a spiral stair. First thought was to run
adjacent to the stair and put the valves in the stair. It can be done if
they then build a rated shaft around the standpipe. So we have an option
just confused when this caught me from left field.
