Depends on how your State's social services department defines
assisted living, or how your building code defines it, or both.
assisted living is not universally defined anymore than nursing home
or group home is. The social services department typically will
determine how many and what assortment of need can be defined as a
particular category such as (and I'm just pulling a number out of my
....) a maximum of twenty with up to four having some sort of
dementia. Exceed either criterion and the facilities licensing
requirements change as does the definition of the facility. The
definition determines level of staffing, security, etc. in addition to
fire protection.
