You guys miss my point on this one I am afraid. When they removed"handled" it became much harder to define. That's all I am saying. For years it was easy enough to figure out along with the AHJ's.

BTW, the appendix still has the clarification for this section with the word "handled".

Every "clarification" in any book of laws/codes elicits ten more
questions. 13 will continue to grow and become increasingly unwieldy
as long as we succumb to the idea that there can be no mistakes. That
nothing can be harmed. That life must be turned into a still life
parody of itself. Too much philosophy today. Life's dangerous! NO ONE

It's an imperfect world.

Look at the number of proposals the TC needs to consider each cycle,
consider the number of new technologies in storage like Big Fans, 100' tall
ASRS racks and plastic pallets, consider the number of new construction
types and novel applications of existing ones, consideration of addressing
areas where failures have taken place and protection levels need to be
upgraded, surprises like the AF mess, and you'll wonder why you ever asked
to be on the darn committee in the first place.

There is no way they could ever address each instance and that's why the
Associations offer their services to answer requests for clarification, and
why some contractors employ the John Denharts of our industry full-time.

The Code is crystal clear- until a second person reads it.

Well, so be it.....but it is defined enough to take most AHJ's out of the
"warm fuzzy judgement call" mode and not definitive enough to give them
answers SOMETIMES.

Will there ever be a time when every situation has a definitive answer in

Probably not, or you would need that loading dock and forklift to pick
it up.

"protect per NFPA #13"..... I would really like a definitive answer.
