Windows XP Mode requires Win7 Pro or Ultimate OS.
I had to upgrade my home laptop PC [64-bit] OS from Home Premium to Pro
to get it so I can run old programs.
It is a free but big download from Microsoft and runs in its own virtual
environment and needs the other free download for Windows Virtual PC.

The Microsoft website addresses both programs here:

I did it myself, but I'm a PC geek and the former network, hardware, &
software guru at my old employer [an engineering consulting firm].
If you are sufficiently PC savvy you might be able to do it yourself,
too; otherwise, get your IT to look into it.

Win7 will run on any PC that can run XP, for the most part. But you
need as much memory and processor speed as possible. We upgraded all
of our existing work stations before we made the change we've got a
minimum of 4GB of RAM on our machines now, up to 8GB on a couple of
them. But from here on out, our new computers are going to be
configured with ridiculous spec's, not only for the Win7 OS but for the
graphics required for Navis, MEP, Revit, etc., etc.

FIRST, you gotta buy a 64 bit machine, right? (g)
