Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is the wood with the fire
retardant coating will have to comply with NFPA (2010) 8.15.1.2.10 and not
8.15.1.2.11. My question is what is the 20 minutes that is been referred to?
Is it the duration of the test? And what is the "form in which they are
installed"? The 2007 handbook commentary says "... material arranged in the
position in which it is to be installed. Changes in the orientation or
arrangement of the material can significantly change the flamespread
characteristics and the combustibility of the material." I think the test
must typically be done in a a furnace, with coated wood planks kept
horizontal. Is that not good enough? It would really help if someone can
give me an example.

8.15.1.2.10 Concealed spaces where rigid material are used and the exposed
surfaces have a flame spread rating of 25 or less, and the materials have
been demonstrated not to propogate fire more than 10.5 feet when tested in
accordance with ASTM 84, Standard Test Method of Surface Burning
Characteristics of Building Materials, or ANSI/UL 723, Standard for Test for
Surface Burning Chacteristics of Building Materials, extended for additional
20 minutes in the form in which they are installed, shall not require
sprinkler protection.

First, take a look at the new (2010) NFPA 13 8.15.1.2.11 and
A.8.15.1.2.11 and the handbook commentary to A.8.15.1.2.11. Then check out
their website information and UL site info on the specific product they are
using.
I've got an inspection to run to but they were just at the SC Fire Academy
yesterday educating folks on their products. Note that they have multiple
related products. Some are intumescent coatings, some soak in, some are
clear, some are opaque, etc.

Their website is:

Their SE office number is 352.404.4274 in case you want to call & get the
number for representatives for the CA area.

Subject: Fire retardant coating

I'm checking out a fire retardant coating called 'noburn'. Has anyone come
across it? In particular, has it been used to omit sprinklers in a
combustible concealed space?

NFPA 13, 2007 section 8.15.1.2.10: Concealed spaces where rigid materials
are used and the exposed surfaces have a flame spread index of 25 or less,
and the materials have been demonstrated not to propogate fire when tested
in accordance with NFPA 255, Standard Method of Test of Surface Burning
Characteristics of Building Materials, extended for an additional 20 minutes
in the form in which they are installed, shall not require sprinkler
protection.

I believe this is the criteria by which the fire retardant needs to be
judged. Is that correct? What is the "additional 20 minutes" that is being
referred to? I will be taking a closer look at NFPA 255. But meanwhile if
there is anyone who has already gone through this process, I would
appreciate any comments.
