These are my initial thoughts. 1) two people were in the house when the fire started, and both escaped without injury. At that point the fire protection life safety systems had performed as designed. 2) If you expose plastic pipe under pressure (even filled with water) to enough heat for a long enough period of time it will fail. The same is true of all materials. 3) Why was an internal attack being made, if the residents were not inside and in danger, and the fire was in the attic space? After all the warnings about "New Lightweight Home Construction" Has this info not reached fire departments in CA? WARNING!!! DANGER!!!DANGER!!! 4) It is with sorrow that it always takes these kinds of incidents to change policy and procedures.
Let's hope that the Owners of this 12,500 SF "Home" are aware that the 13D system is not intended to suppress an attic fire, or do anything at all after 10 Min. That the taxes they paid, or will pay in the future, will never be enough to offset the cost of this fire to the Dept. or the family of this fire fighter. We can build new homes, we cannot replace the life lost.
