The City of Los Angeles did not require fire sprinklers in the attic and most home used CPVC. All homes over 10,000 sq.ft. required an F.D.C., so could it be possible that they pumped into the F.D.C and pumped over 200 psi?

If one or the other was used I would think that if was not the proper aterial for the application. PEX is only listed for 13D application and has a isting (one mfg. only) for exposed installation under smooth flat ceiling. A little extra weight and the nails/screws have nothing to old on to. And was it PEX or CPVC? I've tried to light CPVC with a ap gas torch and without water in it I could only get it to "burn" at he point impinged on by the flame itself and than after removal of he flame there was only charring, not melting. Obviously it melts at ome temperature but what is it and what is it for PEX? For instance, you think the failure of the attic trusses (to which the ceiling is attached) had anything to do with it? The components are typically held together with gusset plates that expand much faster than the wood they are attached to, the small teeth pull out of the wood, and they fall off creating a truss with nothing holding it together (well maybe a little compression from gravity). Now add a little additional weight and it all comes tumbling down. There is a lot of discussion on light weight structural members on the Fire Dept websites and Forums so I imagine this aspect will be part of the formal investigation.
