I sent this out on EPARADE and, after reading George's email, felt compelled to
send it out here:

It is 56 miles from this recent fire in Loysville to Miles Township, PA. There,
in 1998, 11 kids died in a fire in a two story "recreational cabin".

You can read more on that here:
http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/news/1998/03/23/1998-03-23_11_die_in_pa__cabin_fire_wee.html

I attended a hearing in Harrisburg shortly thereafter. There was pending
legislation that would mandate smoke detectors in all homes. I personally heard
the state legislator from that area testify that while smoke detectors are
important, they should not be mandatory. He went so far as to say he actually
spoke to the family members of the victims. He said they urged him to oppose
mandatory smoke detectors.

Our current UCC adoption legislation excludes section R313.1.1 of 2003 IRC (or
its successor codes) from applying to existing one and two family dwellings
undergoing alterations, repairs, or additions - though it does require
non-interconnected battery powered smoke alarms. Furthermore, the UCC excludes
recreational cabins from the code entirely if equipped with a smoke detector, a
fire extinguisher, and CO alarm and the owner files an affidavit that the cabin
is a cabin.

While we may see the obvious connection between the fires and the means to
avert such tragedies, others do not.

Despite all the FACTS, the PA House voted 154-39 to repeal sprinklers on Monday.
On Tues night, just 25 NW of our capitol, 7 kids from 7 months to 11 yrs old
died in a fire in a rural area.
On wed am there was a fire 2 hrs east of the capitol, 18 minutes after dispatch
the fire was under control-
Fire in laundry room controlled by resi prkr. Page 17.
Amazing what fat checkbooks, election campaigns, and bs propaganda will get you
in America.

We're now sprinklering the church the family that lost 7 of 8 kids attended. 25
miles away, the legislature is saying the loss of these 7 lives is acceptable,
we don't need another nanny govt mandate.
