We use the "supply" method regularly, as I have a couple of clients in
commercial RE brokerage. Before they propose a lease for warehousing
clients, we sometimes run calc's to see what we can get out of a system
to gauge what upgrades, if any, the building owner or tenant would have
to undertake to move that particular storage array into the subject
building. This allows us to compare a .6/2,000 to a .45/3000 with
different K factors and potential express main upgrades, etc. Very
handy feature ...

A supply calc (calculating from the point of service to the remote area)
determines the maximum density of water that the sprinklers can flow
given that supply. A demand calc (calculating from the remote area back
to the source) calculates for a specific density and then tells you what
the safety factor is of that supply. We occasionally use supply calcs
for areas we may expect to be modified to a higher occupancy in the
future, or to consult with an owner to give them an idea of what the
maximum storage or occupancy arrangement for an existing area might be.
Generally the demand calculation from the remote area working back to
the supply is the most common calc though.

What is the difference when performing hydraulic calculations from point
of service to most remote area, compared to most remote area to point of
service? (NFPA 13 CH 14.4.4.4.5)
