Actually, this sounds like one of those egg crate ceilings from the days when eggs were much larger than the chicken could handle.Like DINASAURS.Yea,call it a "Prehistoric" egg crate ceiling with 99% opening so as not to impede the discharge of the automatic fire suppression system installed at the roof above (as it should be). This makes about as much sense as the AHJ calling it an obstruction.Millions of qualified people out of work and along comes this idiot creating unnecessary trouble for some poor Joe (or Dale) just trying to make a living!Go figure!

Only if the fake ceiling is a fake egg crate ceiling. Oops. I think we're

That's a good idea but hardly moron proof. This particular AHJs logic: If the drop out tiles are not there then it must be a "fake" ceiling (this was a term used in a contract I just read not more than three hours ago) and whether fake or not it's still a ceiling and a ceiling that's not there is still an obstruction because the word exists in my mind. (To steal a line from a commercial) This makes perfect sense if you don't think about it.

Why not just call it a "Drop Out Ceiling" with the tiles dropped out? (Or
just protect it as if it had drop out panels?)

Ron,

I started looking for definitions but couldn't find anything to help the
cause. It would have been great to have it in 13 like the Drop-Out
Ceiling.
The Architect had it labeled as grid only / no tiles and I left that note
on
the drawing.

The contractor has suggested to not install the grid.
