The reason that we have used the butterfly valve as opposed to flipping the check on the FDC is for the annual testing as well. In NFPA25, 2008 edition, 13.6.2 calls for forward flow testing annually. In order to flip the check you will need to shutdown and drain systems first to flip it, then energize and flow, then drain down and return to original position.
