Dear Forum.

Looking for some insight from those of you that have dealt with using pipe
sealant (dope type). While I was living in the States it was all I ever saw
contractors using and never quizzed it too much.

In the company I have recently joined they have previously been using Hemp
and Boss White (links below). We are required by a project's spec to switch
to pipe sealant compound but there is some internal concern with the change.
We are retrofitting an live electrical room so trying to be as careful as
possible.

One of the concerns at the company here is regarding the directions of use
for these sealant compounds with regards to cleaning. The product we are
using 'Loctite 577' states "For best results, clean all surfaces (external
and internal) with a Loctite cleaning solvent and allow to dry'. Also states
'If the material is an inactive metal or the cure speed is too slow, spray
with Activator 7471 or 7649 and allow to dry'.

>From my understanding, utilizing these cleaners (or activators) prior to
application is not common practice but would like other's input in this
regards. Are you wiping threading off with a cloth? How anal are you in
regards to the cleaning prior to application of the pipe sealant?

Any other thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Thank you.
