Subject: Interior canopy obstruction

I am working on a facility where they are installing some new offices in
an industrial building. Around the perimeter of the offices is a canopy
which extends out 2'-6" from the office walls. The canopy height is
about 9'-6" and the ceiling sprinklers are at 18'-9". The question is do
we need sprinklers below the canopies. Section 8.6.5.3 says that
sprinklers need not be installed if the obstruction is less than 4'-0"
wide. I can go along with it except in one area it covers 1/2 of a 5'-0"
wide corridor. In that situation, I would think that sprinklers would be
necessary. But I get the "if it's less than 4'-0"....." argument. Any
thoughts?
