NFPA 13, 2007. Please look at 6.2.7, in a nut shell. If not recessed, flush or concealed the only listing requirement is for non-metallic escutcheons.

While mostly academic in this exercise, NFPA 13 2010 6.2.7.1 requires them to be metal, or listed even for non recessed escutcheons. Assuming you use genuine 401s it's fine, but there are some plastic knockoffs last I looked and they aren't listed as far as I'm aware. -Mike Morey, SET Sprinkler Designer BMW Constructors, Inc [email protected] Desk: 317-651-0596 Cell: 317-439-2695 -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Eric Tysinger Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2012 8:59 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: EC Heads with 401 style plates? Only recessed plates have to be listed with the particular sprinkler. If the sprinkler is installed up to the max deflector distance (non-recessed) then the plates are only cosmetic at that point. If I am not mistaken the flat plates and 401's are not even required to be listed. This is stated in 13, I just don't have my book around to look up the section. NFPA #13 says that the maximum deflector distance for EC heads (non-comb, unobstructed const) is 12". All of the EC Pensents I am looking at only have Flat Esc. or Semi-rec plates listed. Can you use 401 style plates with these heads even thought they are not specifically listed? My thoughts are that you can because if you used bare pipe you place the head 12" below the ceiling, so if that is true and you choose to cover the pipe with Deep Plates, it should not be a problem.
