An adequate sprinkler system is at the core of high-piled combustible storage
protection. But you, or someone else, needs to start with the fire code, and
then work towards 13. Someone needs to determine all the requirements.
Inside 13, I'd never automatically say in-rack sprinklers are required. I'd go
start tracking down what kind of water is available in the main, and while that
is in progress, go back to commodity classification, see what a ceiling only
design would require. I'd also talk with business. Do they plan on going
higher? This is not a project that you can do at third hand. It'd be like using
a Ouija ( sp ?) Board. Correction from down to 15' is considerable. Assuming
you can apply Fig. 16.2.1.3.4.1 design density is reduced 40% in most cases.
Can an acceptable design density be arrived at by using heads with a higher
K-factor? If so, this is typically the preferred route.
It is also easy to forget to consider whether column protection is required.

Subject: Proposing changes to existing system for new storage criteria

I got a call the other day form a local company that bought a cold dark shell
approximately 4 years ago and has been using part of it as a storage warehouse
for miscellaneous items similar to what you would find at any store checkout
counter. Lighters, aspirin, pens, various odds and ends, and they are stored on
racks, mostly in cardboard boxes, with the storage as high as 15' in some
areas. The other day the AHJ stopped in and recommended they cut slats in the
wooden shelving to allow the overhead system to reach the bottom shelves. At
first I thought this might work but turns out the overhead system was only
designed for AH-2 using standard 5.6k heads so now it looks like they're gonna
definitely need rack protection. Any advice or potential problems anyone can
see?
