The original reference by Ron F. below is from NFPA 13-2010. I am now wondering if the response by Roland would indeed apply "...throughout buildings". Specifically, can we use intermediate temp residential heads in a dorm room even if far enough away from a heat source to use ordinary temp? 8.3.2.5* (8) makes me wonder, even though it is lumped with other than residential areas (or maybe because it is!).
