I have to agree with Ron. For years I have installed EQ braces using quick straps and 1" braces. Always was under the impression that these were spaced in accordance with NFPA13. It wasn't until I was required through a plan review years later ( then as a designer ) to calculate the bracing that I grasped the depth of consideration and planning involved with determining what kind, how closely spaced, what size, ..... . Not to mention what you gain or loose based on spacing, how the ZOI can be effected by going the 40' max instead of say 30'.
Granted, today as an owner I only deal with the occasional category C and our plan reviews are typically by some EIT looking at a checklist he/she has on the screen in front of them requesting seismic calculations, .... having no idea how to read them. Still, if we are going to take the authority to require them and the time to install them, ... We should at least do them right. My two cents. How do you know what you did will work? How do you know that 1" x 34" brace at 37 degrees to side of a beam doesn't need to be shorter, at a different angle, or a 1 1/4" brace, without doing calcs? 13 only tells you the general and minimal places where the braces need to go, lateral and longitudinal, but you ned to do the work and then prove it. Why then would you not include the calcs in your submittal?
