Don't always assume the questions and projects are based on installation here
in the good old USofA. There can be vastly different rules and different
players when you are doing foreign work.

Fire sprinkler designers in some areas of the world face challenges you
couldn't even imagine.

Subject: Re: WHEN TO DE USE BACK FLOW PREVENT???

Water purveyors (the water supplier) have two primary charges. First is to
provide clean drinking water and the second is to ensure aesthetically pleasing
water. Both are driven by a public trust. Since they have no control of how
their water is being used or abused once it enters a premise the AWWA has a set
of rules governing how to separate private premises from a reverse flow to the
public system, determined by the degree of hazard to health and appeal. The
methods are governed by the health code and the installation rules by the
plumbing code. Sprinkler systems connected to the public supply are considered
to be a potential threat to taste while nuclear power plants and sewage
treatment facilities are considered to be such a risk to health that they are
not allowed to be directly connected at all, and require a break tank with a
fill line having an air gap designed to a minimum specification (2 times the
diameter of the fill line above the flood rim of the tank if I reca
 ll properly).
