UFC 3-600-01 4-2.3.1 Sprinkler Density and Hose Stream Requirements. Building and structures requiring sprinkler protection must be provided with sprinkler systems that are designed using the Area/Density Method of NFPA 13, \2\ except the design density, design area, hose stream allowance and duration of supply requirements for non-storage occupancies must be in accordance with FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheet 3-26, Fire Protection Water Demand for Non-Storage Sprinklered Properties Tables 1 through 4, including the revised Table 2 in FM Engineering Bulletin 04-12. /2/
I'll give you they say area/density and NFPA 13 11.2.3.2 says density/area but they mean the same thing. Small room falls under the next section 11.2.3.3 Room Design Method. UFC does not refernce you to 11.2.3 Water Demand Requirements - Hydraulic Calculation Methods. Which would get you density/area, room design and special areas. Chris could you point me to where it says you can't use small room? UFC is clear to me, no you can't use small room - area/density only, and no the calcs are not per FM. There are 5 things you pull from FM and only these 5 things, density, design area, hose stream allowance, duration and minimum k-factor. And really these only apply to things defined as HC1-3. For example HPS would follow NFPA 13. The UFC is confusing as the installation goes by 13 and the calcs go by FM standards.....
