This is getting crazier as it goes along. The building was originally designed as light hazard and to be offices only on the lower level. Now they want to bring in a restaurant. So, there are some issues with ordinary hazard coming in to play.

Also, these ceiling tiles will be above the restaurant seating area which is light hazard, so we have to put QR in the area to be in compliance with NFPA 13. The sprinkler contractor is trying to get them to forego the idea of the drop out ceilings. It is still all in flux right now.

I would not jump to the conclusion that you have to change to a higher temp
rating. Must confess, I’ve seen only one drop-out ceiling (well 80% drop-out
since 8 or 10 standard ceiling tiles had been installed long after the initial
installation) and this issue has never come up in the last 20 years.

Even at a slightly higher temp rating, the ceiling is still exposed first and
not sure how much heat gets past it before it drops out. Any idea what's the
ceiling RTI rating - lol.

What does the manufacturer data sheet say? A quick search shows the UL
certification is based on SR sprinklers with a 165 F rating.

A bigger first question is what is the occupancy classification so as to ensure
that SR sprinklers are acceptable. Can not use QR or EC above these ceilings
(13:8.15.15.2).

Is anyone running into these things lately? How are you handling them?

I have never really been a fan of these things. A customer has a job where the
builder is wanting to use these tiles to eliminate the need for sprinklers at
the ceiling. We did the shell space and there are 155 degree uprights at the
deck. This is 1st floor of a 4 story building.

The tiles are rated at 165f. The sprinklers will have to be changed to 200F so
the sprinklers will activate after the tiles fall.

What is your thoughts on these things?
