Just curious how do the water purveyors deal with fire department apparatus
using fire hydrants ?

What's the concern, low or negative suction pressures ?

We have a purveyor here in CT who will not allow booster pumps fed from their
mains under any circumstances. They cover around 3 times the population that
yours cover. There is no arguing with them. They can do pretty much what they
want as long as it meets health code and doesn't restrict access.

I have a private water purveyor in a small town in the Central Valley area of
California who will not allow a fire water booster pump to be installed taking
suction directly from their 16" municipal main without one of two protection
methods. Their first choice is an appropriately sized break tank with the pump
suction connected directly to the tank and an air gap fill line for refill.
Their second option is an appropriately sized surge suppression tank, 1000
gallon minimum capacity with calculations to substantiate the actual size, and
an RPZ Backflow device installed on the suction side of the booster pump. The
town served by this municipal system has a population of 130,000 and a land
area of 32 square miles. For our project we would use a 1500 GPM engine driven
booster pump with 165 psi net discharge pressure to supply a K 17 ESFR system
designed for 12 sprinklers operating at 52 psi.
Now for the questions.
1) Does anyone have any experience with this type requirement who can explain
this in a way that makes sense?
2) Has anyone ever contested these requirements and won the argument?
Anyone?
