Mike,
there's some explanatory text in the handbook.
A recessed escutcheon is part of a listed sprinkler assembly, and
therefore, it should be attached tothe sprinkler as intended by the
sprinkler manufacturer and not require glue or caulk for attachment.
Theapplication of glue or caulk could interfere with the intended
operation by blocking vent holes or clearancesbetween moving parts.
I knew the text of the section, however I had not read the
additional information from the handbook.
sincerely,

We are working on a single story residential project where the piping
is run in the attic to supply semi-recessed pendants in the dwelling
space. The GC is working on an Energy Star rating and is going to do a
fan test to determine how tight the building envelope is. They would
like us to seal around the outer trim ring so that no air can get
through during the fan test. The GC suggested that we apply a bead of
clear silicone caulk around the outside of the trim ring to do that.
We are pushing back against using a generic sealant on the
escutcheons, but as long as it does not get on the sprinkler I can’t
really think of any code issue.
Has anyone heard of a situation like this (outside of a clean room)?
Thanks!
Matt Grisé
