Matt, I was on a project in my field days where the building was tested for to LEED requirements for air leakage. We used extended escutcheons and the GC caulked around the pipe protruding from the wall. I know of a couple units that failed the air leakage test because there was not enough caulk around the pipe at the drywall. That being the case, I imagine it would fail horribly without the penetration(s) being sealed.

However, I know, as you do, that the standard governing the installation of a sprinkler system tells me specifically not to do that, and doesn't provide a word of guidance on how such testing should be evaluated. Stepping outside of that limitation is something I'm very careful to avoid. Lacking any information on that sort of issue, I'll let the contractor pushing for the use of caulking know that lacking any guidance from a conflicting standard or code, I'll follow NFPA 13 and refuse to do what he's asking. sincerely, Ken Wagoner, SET Parsley Consulting 350 West 9th Avenue, Suite 206 Escondido, California 92025 Phone 760-745-6181 Visit our website<http://www.parsleyconsulting.com/> On 12/14/2016 2:16 PM, Matt Grise wrote: I have no idea if it will pass or not. A recessed escutcheon is part of a listed sprinkler assembly, and therefore, it should be attached to the sprinkler as intended by the sprinkler manufacturer and not require glue or caulk for attachment. The application of glue or caulk could interfere with the intended operation by blocking vent holes or clearances between moving parts. I knew the text of the section, however I had not read the additional information from the handbook. sincerely, Ken Wagoner, SET Parsley Consulting 350 West 9th Avenue, Suite 206 Escondido, California 92025 Phone 760-745-6181<tel:%28760%29%20745-6181> Visit our website<http://www.parsleyconsulting.com/> On 12/14/2016 1:29 PM, Mike B Morey wrote: NFPA 13 2013: 6.2.7.4 The use of caulking or glue to seal the penetration or to affix the components of a recessed escutcheon or concealed cover plate shall not be permitted. ________________________________ Mike Morey Project Manager * Fire Protection Shambaugh & Son, LP an EMCOR Company 7614 Opportunity Drive * Fort Wayne, IN * 46825 direct 260.487.7824<tel:%28260%29%20487-7824> / cell 260.417.0625<tel:%28260%29%20417-0625> / fax 260.487.7991<tel:%28260%29%20487-7991> email mmo...@shambaugh.com<mailto:mmo...@shambaugh.com> [cid:image001.jpg@01D25629.78EC84E0] From: Matt Grise <m...@afpsprink.com><mailto:m...@afpsprink.com> To: "sprinklerforum@lists.firesprinkler.org"<mailto:sprinklerforum@lists.firesprinkler.org> <sprinklerforum@lists.firesprinkler.org><mailto:sprinklerforum@lists.firesprinkler.org> Date: 12/14/2016 04:24 PM Subject: sealing sprinkler head penetrations Sent by: "Sprinklerforum" <sprinklerforum-boun...@lists.firesprinkler.org><mailto:sprinklerforum-boun...@lists.firesprinkler.org> ________________________________ We are working on a single story residential project where the piping is run in the attic to supply semi-recessed pendants in the dwelling space. The GC is working on an Energy Star rating and is going to do a fan test to determine how tight the building envelope is. They would like us to seal around the outer trim ring so that no air can get through during the fan test. The GC suggested that we apply a bead of clear silicone caulk around the outside of the trim ring to do that. We are pushing back against using a generic sealant on the escutcheons, but as long as it does not get on the sprinkler I can't really think of any code issue. Has anyone heard of a situation like this (outside of a clean room)? Thanks!
