Don't see anything in the standard or IFC that prohibits re-using demo'd pipe. Could you require that the contractor prove there is no MIC in the re-used pipe? At least that would provide a level of assurance the pipe is sound. Also, might put enough pressure on the contractor to abandon the practice or possibly even undo some of the questionable work.

Apparently they demo’d sections of pipe and rehung to supply new sprinklers (it was obvious because the salvaged sections were painted and adjacent lengths were not:)). In my mind I shouldn’t have to do anything except say, “you can’t do that!”. However, I’ve been asked to find references in our spec and/or the codes and standards that prohibits hanging demo’d pipe. Our spec does say “Install pipes and pipe fittings in accordance with NFPA Standards.” Wondering if anyone knows of any language in NFPA 13 or elsewhere that would bolster my argument beyond saying that it is “commonly understood” or “standard practice”? My view is that we gave permission to utilize existing piping; once they removed it, the pipe became demolished piping, not existing.
