I think that is a pretty solid assumption. I just had a seminar about attic sprinklers and that is exactly what happened in the tests they showed.

I don’t recall the design guidelines requiring the second calc flowing a bunch of sprinklers at the eave. If I had to guess I would say we don’t see that calc called out because an attic fire tends to not spread along the eave. Rather if it starts there it quickly moves up the slope towards the ridgeline, with limited horizontal spread. I would assume that testing shows no more than two sprinklers operate at the eave with 3 or 4 typically operating at the peak – or something similar. Thus the recommended design with some safety factor calls out 7 at the peak and two at the eave. But this is just my knee-jerk assumption. -Mark [Visit our Website at http://secure-web.cisco.com/1AT5Ul-WsOAbqZwoIttKNr26lYL4B9PuvaLq-6t_OhZWrLQn-R3i3Vn5hc1VrTrSc5RiFlDuTM_VRqgP4fCDzL46pLDJOBs4gRMMrs_vsDdCV27PyrS_2b1jqwzyTM-Wqe6RofDRrdkNGFotuMRnt9vwj9w5vGYJ_JkPlHSDwy2WieBcWq3BvpE02Cm-kvz7r2OATr-NrXjroUmrejhdKvHlTMQojC8HZD4j456822kl634XhKH0HD4R21hMP0D-b7gQCMXYHJrp2W_E_r7kKSg/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.SummitCoUS.com]<http://secure-web.cisco.com/1AT5Ul-WsOAbqZwoIttKNr26lYL4B9PuvaLq-6t_OhZWrLQn-R3i3Vn5hc1VrTrSc5RiFlDuTM_VRqgP4fCDzL46pLDJOBs4gRMMrs_vsDdCV27PyrS_2b1jqwzyTM-Wqe6RofDRrdkNGFotuMRnt9vwj9w5vGYJ_JkPlHSDwy2WieBcWq3BvpE02Cm-kvz7r2OATr-NrXjroUmrejhdKvHlTMQojC8HZD4j456822kl634XhKH0HD4R21hMP0D-b7gQCMXYHJrp2W_E_r7kKSg/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.SummitCoUS.com> Mark Sornsin Sr. Fire Protection Engineer Direct: 701-499-1391 Cell: 701-526-8585 From: Sprinklerforum [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Tony Silva Sent: Tuesday, October 10, 2017 4:40 PM To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>; [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Subject: Re: Attic Design, Using BB1 & AP Sprinklers You need 2 calcs. One is the 7 BB + 2 AP's. The second calc is only AP heads. The length of the design area will be based on the 1950 sf design area, so you will need to calc more than 2 AP heads. At least that is how I would do it. We are able to use BB1 sprinklers along the attic ridge line, but the main size becomes slightly inflated when designed this way. Tyco's published literature regarding attic sprinklers indicate that BB1 sprinklers along the ridge, used with AP sprinklers at the eaves on a dry system should be calculated using seven BB sprinklers plus up to two most demanding AP sprinklers (Figure 20-B-2 from TFP610 page 20, below). If the AP sprinklers at the eaves are on their own branch lines running perpendicular to structure (see Figure 14A below), should these branch lines really be sized to only accommodate two sprinklers? Figure 20-C-3 indicates that AP sprinklers should be calculated using the most demanding 1950 sqft, but this appears to describe hip roofs, not a traditional gable. Any insight is appreciated, thanks in advance. [cid:[email protected]] [cid:[email protected]] -- Joe Meyer, P.E.
