I know Ken Wagoner. His eyes are ALWAYS dilated.

Yes, we've been dealing with it (for years).

In your spec, you could reference the equivalency clause, section 1.4, of NFPA
24. PE4710 is clearly superior to the other resins. It would be a slam dunk.

NFPA 24 will not be updated unless someone submits public input. If you don't
do it, I might. I imagine Ken Wagoner's eyes are already dilated.

Subject: HDPE's PE 4710 resin for FP use

UG FW forumites,

Not sure if any of you are aware of this but NFPA 24 (2016) edition requires
HDPE piping materials to be selected from AWWA C906 per Table 10.1.1. NFPA 24
Section 2.3.3 specifically references the 2007 edition of AWWA C906. In AWAA
C906 (2007), PE 4710 is not available. The allowable resins in this standard
are/were PE 2406, PE 3406, and PE3408.

To comply with this, when actually purchasing the HDPE for fire water service,
we have been stipulating, and being supplied with, PE4710 (previously
dual-certified to PE 3408 including FM approvals matching those of PE3408) for
as long as I can remember. FM 1613 Approval Standard dated 12/31/17 has
finally recognized the improved hydrostatic design stress characteristics of
this resin and reclassified PE 4710 resin pressure classifications matching
those the manufacturers had been stating from some time. PE 3408 is being or
has already been phased out per our known manufacturers now only making/using
PE 4710 resins in HDPE piping and fitting production.

Since the 2016 edition of NFPA 24 still only recognizes AWWA C906 (2007), we
are having to take the FM-approval as 'overruling' the Standard in this
instance or else we are having difficulty writing spec language that allows us
to provide PE 4710 for fire protection service because the NFPA 24 does not yet
'allow' for this resin.

Have any of you run into this?

Do you know if NFPA 24 will be updated so that the 2015 edition of AWWA C906,
which does include reference to PE 4710 resins (and others), will be acceptable?
