What are you waiting for..... 1) Request a written Notice of Violation which requires the adopted code citation(s).
2) Review the NOV and determine if code citation is correct, if a) if correct then advise client and comply if b) not correct than; 3) File Notice of Appeal to the respective entity that handles appeals. Argue the incorrect citation demonstrating the correct code section. 4) Alternatively some state agency's have a regulatory bureau that hears complaints about inspectors, but again be certain you are correct else the issue could be sent to the sprinkler contractor licensing board for a compentency hearing. In closing if the client does not want to do this then comply with the notice right or wrong. The power is in the clients hands to uphold the code. Before everyone chimes in I understand the part about not pissing off inspectors but the choice is yours. Last but not least before throwing that rock be sure your house isn't made of glass. Let’s stop using the word “accessible” in conjunction with T-Bar ceilings. As described in the standard for purposes of determining whether a non-combustible space might require sprinklers or not, the concept of accessible is in the context of occupancy. Is the space accessible FOR OCCUPANCY. Putting your head into an interstitial space most certainly does NOT make it accessible for occupancy. If there’s a suspended, load-bearing platform that you can store or stand on, then it’s accessible. If there’s a heater in that space that’s suspended from the deck, then obviously you can access the equipment for service, but it’s not occupied or accessible in the sense that you would have to fire protect for some other use than “Unused Attic” as it’s described in Chapter 5. That the appliance is gas-fired adds a twist to the conversation, but not so profoundly that a single upright sprinkler at the unit wouldn’t address that concern. Occupancy = fire load. If it doesn’t have measurable fire load, it doesn’t matter if you can “access” it from a ladder. We have to deal with this crap all the time with state agencies here in CA and it’s exhausting … SML From: Sprinklerforum [mailto:sprinklerforum-boun...@lists.firesprinkler.org] On Behalf Of Jay Stough Sent: Wednesday, May 09, 2018 8:25 AM To: Sprinkler Forum Subject: Re: Non-Combustible Concealed Space (NFPA 13 2013) It is accessible thru the suspended ceiling with ladders. Most of the HVAC equipment is on the roof, but there is one gas fired unit in that concealed space in one area. I cannot find where I have to install sprinklers in that area due to the unit, but it does not feel right eliminating them. If I put sprinklers above the ceiling in this area, it would still be about half the building. I know I am missing something in 8.15, so can anyone help? Thanks!
