Hi Nicky,

The K34 Sprinklers are part of a larger fire protection strategy. That
strategy counts on a philosophy known as "Surround and Drown" (a motto that
manufacturers surely don't use in literature). The K34 is listed for use as a
special application sprinkler and was designed and tested for cold storage
applications. In fact, the section you site in FM 8-9 is titled Special
Applications and the section specifically states that you have to use the
system components that the sprinkler were tested with and that you must submit
calculations showing conformance to those standards. That means that it is
part of the QUELL delayed response, dry system. This requires use of the
proprietary software to determine trip times and water-delivery times to show
that you meet the requirements for this concept. It is my understanding that
only Quell licensed contractors can participate in that program. Therefore, I
don't think you'll not be able to purchase those heads for use without training
and certification in this protection philosophy.

I hope you'll be able to find a strategy that works for your project.

It should be recognized that the above is my opinion as a member of the NFPA 13
Committee, and has not been processed as a formal interpretation in accordance
with the NFPA Regulations Governing Committee Projects and should therefore not
be considered, nor relied upon, as the official position of the the NFPA, nor
any of their technical committees.

Sincerely,

Subject: Purchase of TY 9101 K34 sprinkler

Hi all

We are looking at using the new FM Global DS8-9 design criteria for a 55 ft
(16.7m) ceiling warehouse (Table 14a or 14b) which using K33.6 (K48 metric)
sprinklers on a pre-action system. A ‘roof only’ solution – no in-rack
sprinklers.

This would be the Tyco TY9101 sprinkler.

But apparently Tyco will only supply this sprinkler to accredited
Quell/Vanquish installers here in New Zealand. Even an independent supplier of
Tyco heads is advising they cannot get them.

We only want to follow FM design, not use Tyco Quell/Vanquish system.

Just wondering if anyone else has struck this issue?
