I hope this isn’t digressing too much. A moderate amount of sprinkler designers 
don’t dive too deep into building or fire code away from spk’s, and maybe 
alarms.

Mall hose connections. Malls were often built on the edge of town. This is 
another way of saying often built where fire response capabilities were spread 
thin. 

Covered Malls (defined term) over 50k sf. require a Smoke Exhaust system. 
Design criteria is to keep smoke above a person’s head. Emergency generators, 
the whole shebang.

Unlike many areas away from stairs FF’s should be able to find them in a fire. 
These should not solely be viewed as mop up lines. They are extinguishment 
attack lines in conjunction with operating sprinklers. 

FF’s are going to use their own hose, commonly 1-3/4” or 2”, coupled 1-1/2” NST.

It takes a lot of labor to extend hose into a large building. Just what you 
don’t have on the edge of town out by the freeway interchange. See above.
