I’ve been told many times that the only time the fire dept gets to see anything about the building is with fire sprinkler plan review so we sometimes get the off the wall comments for things that are not in our scope. The plan reviewer knows it is not in our scope, but the only way they can get the information verified. So, tell the POR to do the correct work on the plan side in the beginning on the next project and get the flow test done – with appropriate markup – on this project so you can move on to the next one.
I can’t tell you how many times we come across things like this on a weekly basis. Not for the purpose of calculations but to ensure the municipal water delivery system could handle the 500 gpm required (1000 gpm per California Residential Fire Code minus a 500 gpm credit for having fire sprinklers). This is a waste of time and money. It takes approximately four weeks to get done by water company, at a cost of $500. Has anyone argued against such a requirement, and how? I tried but was met with “because I wear a badge and I say so”. The general didn’t want to argue with AHJ, he decided to pay to avoid any further delay.
