For the safety of the installers so they do not have to climb up in the top of an attic or have to make make-shift ladders, I typically try to put the main down the middle for the BB's at chest high and use sprigs. This also helps with getting over mechanical equipment/duct that may be in the attic space. Then I run a low main around the outside edges, looped, to catch the sprinklers around the eves and any pendent sprinklers for the area below. When I use Attic Sprinklers I try my best to use CPVC if it is wet and the water supply is good. (Wet systems in attics. Maybe a Florida thing.)

Just curious what the general school of thought is with running piping in these spaces. Is it better to run the Main high under the ridges with back to back heads (size permitting) or is it better run Mains low and then run smaller Mains up the slope feeding branches at the ridges? I'm working on a job now that kinda resembles a long rectangle with no center (courtyards). I have all the heads laid out with B/B at the ridges, some AP's in the corners & throughout as needed. Just looking for ideas from some of you with much more attic experience than I have. Brian Harris, CET BVS Systems Inc.
