Viking mentions that couplings allow water to pool and freeze over the seal.  
Also I don't know that there's as much of a "standard" for coupling dimensions 
as there are for fittings, the normal ones we use would probably have the 
clearance, but they make shorter ones and other designs that would probably put 
the pipe too close to the sprinkler.
