Mike: Our firm has used LIDAR scans on several projects, including one where we were prime for the design of retrofit systems in 3 buildings from the early 20th century. Absent as-builts, we scanned all three, including the combustible concealed spaces. For that one, we were able to create as-builts that have proven to be very accurate. These scans can be a godsend but:
1. This process (done right) is very, very expensive. 2. The raw data file is a PCD (Point Cloud Data). They are huge and need to be converted. 3. The easiest conversion is to Revit. You have to keep going down the format food chain to get to DWG. This works for us because +80% of our work is in Revit, so we’re used to the huge files and experienced at working on and off “the cloud”. 4. The process is very, very, very expensive. When done right. Steve L. I was wondering if anyone has tried scanning the existing systems and if so, what scanner setup are you using. I have looked at Faro and a couple other brands, but it looks very labor intensive to get the scan and assemble it into a usable model.
