There are options for buried pipe that allow a significant amount of movement. They must be restrained properly. -Kyle at Aero From: Parsley Consulting <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 10, 2026 7:31 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [External][Sprinklerforum] Re: Flexible assembly on pump discharge in seismic category D area Craig, Is he seriously worried that a pipe joint, buried underground with either a thrust block, or a mechanical thrust restraint device is going to move up to 8" when pressurized? Flanged joints don't permit that much movement, if any, and the last time I looked closely at NFPA-24 flanged fittings were acceptable. What on Earth is he going on about? This condition is way outside the normal scope of seismic issues we typically deal with inside buildings. The seismic movement condition the ME is worried about was between the pump building and the underground fire main. So, traditional seismic assemblies won’t work since this needs to be able to be buried in the dirt. However as you are going through a building exterior wall, the wall could move differently than the ground. Thus, the extra separation is required. Notes: There are clearance requirements at the foundation slab. There will also be clearance requirements at the exterior wall. You will some type of flexible weather seal. The seismic design category SDC) is “D”. I am being told by the project ME that we should have a flexible connection on the discharge side outside the bldg. to accommodate the potential of 8-inches of movement between the pumphouse and underground piping system. I’ve looked around to try and find such an assembly for 8” pipe suitable for an outdoor installation and so far haven’t found such a device. So, my question for those out there in seismically active areas, is this standard practice and who makes such an assembly?
