SIDEWALLS AND CEILING POCKETS
Sidewall sprinklers are restricted to smooth ceilings and cannot be used for "unprotected" ceiling pockets. Sidewall sprinklers would be required within the ceiling pocket according to section 8.7.4.1.1. The ceiling pocket protection criteria provided in section 8.6.7 is for standard pendent and upright spray sprinklers. It does not apply to sidewall sprinklers as covered by section 8.7. Sidewall sprinklers could be applied within the pocket since that portion of the ceiling is considered smooth but the overall area is not considered to have a smooth ceiling. This is also supported by A. 3.7.2 (3)(b) for the definition of unobstructed construction that indicates continuous smooth bays formed by wood, concrete, or steel beams spaced more than 71/2 ft on centers - beams supported by columns, girders, or trusses. Note that the sidewall must be located within each bay and cannot be installed to discharge water perpendicular to the beams. In addition, the sidewall sprinklers could be used in ceilings described in sections 8.6.4.1.1.3 and 8.8.4.1.1.4 provided a sidewall sprinkler is located at each ceiling level and installed in accordance with sections 8.7 and 8.9 provided that portion of the ceiling is smooth.

NEW COMMITTEE FOR FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM COMMISSIONING APPROVED
The Standards Council voted to approve the establishment of a new Technical Committee to develop a document related to Fire Protection Systems Commissioning at the July 2007 meeting. The new project would also address the planning, organization, coordination, responsibility, implementation and documentation of commissioning activities and tasks for specific fire protection systems. The Council notes that various provisions and requirements pertaining to the commissioning and acceptance testing of specific fire protection systems already exist in other NFPA documents. Such requirements should be incorporated into the new commissioning document in accordance with NFPA's extract policy, and that additional provisions should be developed where necessary. Anyone interested in serving on this committee or on any NFPA technical committee can download a form from NFPA's web site at http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/PDF/ TCApp.pdf or request a technical committee application form from AFSA Technical Services or Codes and Standards Administration, NFPA, One Batterymarch Park, Quincy, MA 02169-7471.
